Insurance

A 1997 law requires all visitors to Ukraine to obtain mandatory health insurance from the state joint-stock insurance company Ukrinmedstrah at their point of entry into Ukraine. However, anyone holding valid official or diplomatic passports is exempt from this requirement.

Still, be advised that some travelers with official passports have been required to buy insurance—yet the cost has been fairly low (less than $20 per person).

Ukrinmedstrah was created for the sole purpose of developing a state-run program ensuring foreigners receive high-quality emergency medical assistance in Ukraine. The program thus ensures foreigners receive the appropriate medical care they may need while in Ukraine—while guaranteeing that the facilities providing this medical care are compensated.

The cost of insurance depends on the length of stay—NOT the term of validity, or type of visa.

As of November 2009, according to Ukrainian authorities, the cost of insurance is:

• From 1^st day to 3^rd day = $10.00
• From 4^th day to 10^th day = $2.95 per day
• From 11^th day to 30^th day = $30.00

General Medical Information

Travelers may wish to bring a small first-aid kit and a supply of disposable syringes, if they require medications (such as for the treatment of diabetes).

The following items are also suggested:

• Any prescription and nonprescription (OTC) medications you are taking
• Vitamins
• Antibiotics
• Contraceptives, if applicable
• Cold/allergy medicine
• Cough syrup
• Band-Aids
• Aspirin and other pain relievers
• OTC Diarrhea medication
• OTC Laxatives
• Water filter/pump for purification (suggested)
• Antibiotic ointment, such as Bacitracin
• Copy of current eyeglasses prescription, if applicable
• Contact lens solution & cleaners, if applicable
